A Follow-up Study of Alcoholic Inpatients in an Alcoholism Treatment Program


Abstract
Male alcoholics (N£½136) who had been admitted to alcoholism treatment unit in Seoul National Mental Hospital for at least 2 weeks were followed up in order to study of overall outcome of treated alcoholics and prognostic indicators. Mean follow-up period was 25.5¡¾5.73 months, patients and their family members were interviewed by telephone. Then we reviewed medical records of 136 patients for obtaining data about socio-demographic characteristics, alcohol related characteristics, mode of admission and termiantion of treatment program, etc. The results were as follows£º1) Among 136 male alcoholics, 110 (80.8%) patients were categorized as ¡®relapsed¡¯, 8 (5.8%) as ¡®controlled drinking¡¯, and 18 £¨13.2%£© as ¡®abstinence¡¯. Among ¡®relapse¡¯ groups (N£½110), 97 (88.1%) patients relapsed within three months after discharge. Among
total patients, 28 (20.5%) patients attended to A.A. or outpatient treatment programs at least four times after discharge.
2) By comparison between relapse group and recovering group (c ontrolled drinking group and abstinence group), sociodemographic datas and alcohol related characteristics were not significantly different between groups, but ¡®completion of inpatient treatment program¡¯ and ¡®attendance of AA or OPD¡¯ were signifantly high in recovering group.
